Neonaturalism® — Works by Sonia G Caballero
The acquisition committee has considered the inclusion of works belonging to the Neonaturalism® corpus as part of an ongoing strategy to expand a collection dedicated to contemporary art practices that explore the relationship between visual perception, materiality, and the construction of nature in twenty-first-century art.
Neonaturalism® occupies a field of aesthetic research that reinterprets the visual systems of nature not through direct representation, but through perceptual structure. In this respect, the proposal aligns with contemporary art approaches that shift attention away from the image itself and toward the experience of seeing as an active process.
The work of Sonia G Caballero introduces a distinctive visual language characterized by the reinterpretation of organic patterns and nature-inspired structures. Within this framework, nature does not function merely as a descriptive subject but as an underlying formal system. This conceptual shift places her practice within current discussions surrounding visual perception, neuroaesthetics, and the phenomenology of aesthetic experience.
A significant aspect of this contemporary art practice is the use of 24-karat gold as a pictorial material. Beyond its historical and symbolic role within artistic traditions, its application here can be understood as a device for intensifying light and spatial perception, altering the relationship between surface, luminosity, and the viewer’s experience. In this context, gold functions not simply as a signifier of value but as a structural component of the visual field itself.
The practice also reflects a contemporary sensitivity toward ethical material selection by avoiding the use of animal-derived components. This position forms part of a broader movement within contemporary art that seeks to integrate aesthetic expression with material responsibility.
From an institutional perspective, the significance of this acquisition lies not only in the formal singularity of the works but also in their capacity to represent an evolving line of visual thought situated at the intersection of technical tradition, the reinterpretation of nature, and the exploration of contemporary perception.
Neonaturalism® therefore constitutes a field of artistic production that raises relevant questions concerning the relationship between image, matter, and experience. It opens a framework for interpretation that can be activated and reconsidered within the context of a permanent museum collection.
The acquisition of this work is justified not only by its artistic quality and technical refinement, but also by its contribution to the diversification of contemporary artistic languages represented within the collection. Its inclusion strengthens the presence of practices that investigate the relationship between perception, materiality, and the reinterpretation of natural structures beyond traditional models of representation.
As a contemporary art language, Neonaturalism® offers a distinctive perspective on how nature, visual perception, and material presence may interact within the experience of the viewer. Its relevance lies not only in its aesthetic expression but also in its potential to contribute to broader conversations concerning neuroaesthetics, nature-inspired art, and the future development of contemporary visual culture.
